Maxwell R. Morton

The Founder and Managing Director of Grayhead Associates, Mr. Morton, has an extensive consulting background as well as operating and technical management experience and education. In addition, he is an Adjunct Faculty Member at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he teaches a course on Technology Innovation. He has also served at  the Franklin W. Olin Graduate School of Business of Babson College where he created and taught a course on Technology Commercialization; he has also taught at the Babson School of Executive Education. Mr. Morton is the co-founder of the New England Chapter of the Technology Transfer Society and served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee.
As part of his technology commercialization practice, Mr. Morton works with industrial, government and university clients in areas of strategy development and implementation, new product development, technology transfer, strategic alliances, mergers and acquisition, marketing and sales management, operations and control, as well as organizational development and human resource issues. He also has helped companies as they move through the various “growth thresholds” associated with rapidly growing companies.

Additional consulting experience includes:

  • Vice President and Director of Resource Planning Associates Inc. (RPA), an international management consulting firm of 150 people located in 5 offices in the United States and Europe.  Mr. Morton directed engagements for large energy intensive and/or technologically intensive companies as well as US and international government agencies (e.g., DoE, IEA)
  • Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company where he worked with Fortune 500 industrial and consumer product companies on a variety of  marketing, operational and capital planning issues. He also was involved with diversification/acquisitions strategies.

Operating Management experience includes:

  • Executive Vice President of a rapidly growing division of SGC Inc.  where he had responsibility for all sales, operations, planning, and finance during a 3-year period when annual revenues increased from $18 million to $72 million per year. Prior to becoming EVP he was Director of Corporate Development for the parent.
  • Project Manager at Parson Corporation for technically complex, multi-million dollar engineering and construction projects. Clients included both private companies and government agencies.
  • Early technical background included work as a Senior Research Engineer at the California Institute of Technology’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and as a Project Engineer at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics.
Mr. Morton has been a guest lecturer at a variety of institutions such as the: Yale School of Organization and Management; MIT Industrial Liaison Program; Commercial Development Association; Environmental Business Council; Canadian Consulate. He has been published in technical as well as business journals such as “Business Horizons”.  Mr. Morton received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the City College of New York, a Master of Science from the University of Connecticut and has taken additional courses and seminars at Columbia University and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
